Magnificent rural villages, prairies, forests, lakeside scenery and a beautiful towering castle await you and your colored pencils in Romantic Country: A Coloring Book by Japanese illustrator Eriy, who uses an ink-dipped toothpick to draw each intricate design.
In my opinion, this is the most detailed, well thought out and executed coloring book of 2016.

Romantic Country Coloring Book by Eriy

Romantic Country is illustrated by Eriy who is a talented Japanese artist.   Romantic Country has to be in the list of the top  coloring  books of the year.    Romantic Country is part of a series so watch out for the next editions to be released.

The book measures approximately 25cm x 25cm (approximately 10 in x 10 in) and has a beautiful dust jacket.   The cover art shows a lovely castle in the country side.   There is little to color on the dust jacket and sadly there is no cover art on the inner part of the jacket 🙁 The card cover underneath is brown, kraft type card depicting a country scene.   It may be fun to color that with copics or something similar.

Inside the book you will be delighted with the illustrations on both pages of the book.    The paper is off white and whilst good quality, test your wet mediums on the title page first to avoid any nasty bleed through.

The drawings have been created by dipping a tooth pick into ink and drawing.   This is an amazing technique and the first coloring book artist that I know of to create her work in this way.    Eriy explains in the book that she has used a toothpick to create art since she was 8 years old (when she had forgotten to buy a quill (dip) pen).  In order to create this book, she used over 700 toothpicks!  Eriy, encourages you to grab a toothpick and create your own art by experimenting with line widths and drawings.  I think I will just admire her art work 🙂

Romantic Country is set in the fantasy land of Cocot.    This imaginery place is so real to the artist that she gives you a full page background to Cocot including a map!   There is a map that is an overview of the area together with detailed maps of the North and South.   This is the only coloring book that I have that so much thought has gone into the theme that I find it quite breathtaking.  It would be difficult for any other artist to emulate the unique art that this talented woman has created.

This fun coloring book is divided into Chapters.  Chapter 1 is titled the “Hill and Town Overlooking a Clock Tower”.   The illustrations that follow depict the village life.   Chapter 2 is named the “Stories of  Castles”.  As you may have guessed, this chapter depicts beautiful castles including both interior and exterior scenes.   My only negative is that in the beautiful portrait gallery there are gorgeous pictures of cats and dogs in frames, but sadly the Beagle, Shih Tzu, Scottish Terrier and Somali have elements missing.  I would have loved to see the whole pictures of these gorgeous animals (particularly as I am mummy to a lovely Shih Tzu of my own).

This is the type of book that the more you look at it, the more you fall in love with it.   By Chapter 3, I predict you will be enthralled 🙂

Chapter 3, is titled “A villagescape with Beautiful Forests and Lakes”.   The chapter has beautiful country scenes in it including ponds, wishing wells and the like.   In Chapter4, we get to know “A Town Where Genial People Live”.   I have decided that I would like to live in this town.   There are barrows laden with food, flower shops brimming with floral delights, kitchens made ready for baking and a bookshop.   I love that she has added traditional celebratory elements as well.    You will find an Easter Egg collection, a Halloween display, a Christmas tree and a scene from a Circus.

In Chapter 5 “Windmills are a Symbol of this Village” we discover windmills.   Although, you may expect a lot of windmills in this section there are only a few.   The artist concentrates on scenes like laundry drying in the open air, garden scenes and the chill of winter with a Snowman in the yard.

The attention to detail in this book is truly amazing.   At the back of the book you will find details (including page numbers) of the scenes explaining the pictures to you.   For instance, you will learn that at the Seafood Restaurant on page 19 you can eat fresh fish but the restaurant is closed if the owner didn’t catch fish that day.   I have never seen a more detailed, thorough excursion into fantasy land of adult coloring then that produced by this artist.  I am in awe of her talent.   Can you tell I’m a fan?

At the end of the book you will find a poster with three illustrations on it.   The artist, of course, explains how to cut the posters out, color and display them.

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
