Die Welt unter der Lupe – zu Wasser Coloring Book  Review

According to my bad schoolgirl German and the assistance of Google translate,  Rita Berman’s latest coloring book title translates to “The world under the magnifying glass – Water” which is a cute and descriptive name.    It also seems, to the marketer in me, that this is a theme that could be used for a number of coloring books to come 🙂   Speaking of which,   Rita does have another coloring book coming out later in the year with the the same “under the magnifying glass theme” called Die Welt unter der Lupe – zu Lande: Ausmalen und durchatmen which you can pre order now here on Amazon UK or here at Book Depository.

Rita Berman has provided us with an amazing array of small, travel sized coloring books.     Her first coloring books were all based on the seasons of nature.   It was easy to fall in love with these books with their sweet, innocent pictures and handy size.

Cover & Layout

Coloring books that are created by Rita Berman always follow a similar format.  The glossy laminate cover features a partially colored image from the book which wraps the entire book, including the fold out flaps.  The front fold out flap just contains line art that you could color if you wished.

This book differs slightly from her previous Seasons based books in that there is a cut out on the front cover.   The magnifying glass area has been cut out so you can sneak a peek at the colored octopus on the inside fold out flap.  This clever cut out always forms part of the maritime equipment featured on the art work on the inside cover.

On the inside of the cover, a partially colored picture features at the front, with just line art at the back of the book.

On the back cover, there is a cute cartoon coloring scene which indicates that pencils are to be used with the book.

Ideal for travel and short coloring projects, these smaller sized coloring books measure in at  20 cm x 20cm approximately.

Ancillary Pages

A cute little octopus welcomes us to the book.  On the reverse, there is just some simple text listing previous coloring books created by Rita Berman.

A title page follows featuring the magnifying glass and octopus again and on the reverse is copyright information.

There are three pages at the back advertising Die Welt unter der Lupe and her previous Seasons based coloring books,   My Winter Walk,  My Springtime Walk,  My Summer Walk and My Autumn Walk.

Any of the preceding pages would be great to test out your mediums on and see how they react with the paper and your coloring style.

A message from the artist has been included in the book as well.

Layout

This ocean based coloring book has been printed on both sides of the good quality, white medium weight paper.   The paper has a light texture to it making it ideal for colored pencils.

There are 42 double page scenes within the book where the art work does run to the spine.   The binding however in the book ensures that the pages lay down flat.  Colorists will not have any issue coloring line art on or near to the spine.

All of the illustrations have been orientated portrait style throughout the book.

Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The illustrations in Die Welt unter der Lupe – zu Wasser follow an underwater theme with a little bit of a twist.  Embellishments of little flowers and cute little wonky houses that we know Rita for, from her previous coloring books, have been incorporated in all sorts of quirky places.    This makes for a coloring book that has elements of consistency with her previous Seasons based coloring books, and also creates quirky drawings as well.

As you would expect you will find a lot of fish in this coloring book, jellyfish, whales, octopus and turtles.   There are also cute penguins, sea lions and crustaceans.

Most of the drawings also contain other elements to color like buried treasure with gems or sunken ships, empty bottles and one picture featuring our underwater explorers.    As an aside, even though it is only a head shot,  I am pretty sure this is the only time that Rita has included people in her drawings.

The art work has been drawn in a dull black which is easy to see.   The line weight varies between fine to medium.    Many elements of the picture have additional lines added for texture, flow and dimension.

Most of the pages feature a lot of art work within one area.   For this reason,  this book may not be suitable for those with a minor visual impairment.  Many of the small sea creatures have fine details and this may prove too challenging to color.   However, if you were keen, you could always color wash areas that are packed with detail and produce your own unique look.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
