From The Fantasy Art of Molly Harrison, this coloring book is for people of all ages. A bit different from Molly's other illustrations which are more of statuesque, flowing characters, this coloring book features sweet little whimsical, cherub-like characters - fairies, mermaids, witches, kitties, owls and more, it is sure to delight anyone who is a child at heart.

Whimsical World Coloring Book  Review

Molly Harrison is such a talented artist she amazes me!   First of all she has a wild imagination to produce the fantasy based coloring books that she does.   I have previously reviewed here Mystical Coloring Book here.  Not only does she have an amazing imagination but she is able to execute it so beautifully with such clear and readable lines.    I assume she must also be a very efficient work horse as well, judging by the amount and range of coloring books and individual pages for digital stamp lovers that she has created.

The real thing that amazes me about Molly Harrison is that she seems to be able to turn her hand to anything.    Her fantasy based coloring books are intricate and detailed,  she is then able to create these in greyscale as well (a real knack to get the levels of grey right) and then she can produce cutesy little pieces of whimsy like this one!   It’s not often that an artist can create in so many differing styles and she certainly has a talent for doing that!

Cover & Layout

Whimsical World is a soft cover coloring book with a partially colored image on the front.   The cutesy little drawings and faces lacking features and expression is indicative of the pages inside.   A mottled pink, blue and tan background is a backdrop for the line art.

On the back cover each of the 25 illustrations included in the book has been presented as thumbnails.   This is a very useful feature and makes it easy to see online if the book is something you fancy.   My respect for Molly  has increased because she clearly is a wizz at laying out a book cover as well.   She has managed to include all the thumbnails and leave room for the bar code that is automatically applied without ruining the picture.   Maybe she has magic powers!

Whimsical World is approximately A4 sized measuring in at 8.5 in x 11 in

Ancillary Pages

The colored angel from the cover of the book, decorates the title page.

At the end of the book, you will find two blank pages.  Any of the preceding pages can be used to test your mediums and color palettes.

Layout

Illustrations are printed on one side only of the white, trade stock quality paper.   When coloring in the book, make sure to pop a couple of pages behind each page you are working on.   This will avoid dents from pencils and bleed through or ghosting from markers.

All of the illustrations are beautifully centered and positioned on the page.    The images are also well balanced with elements to give a full page scene.

Each illustration is framed within a border.  This ensures that no part of the drawing abuts the spine for ease of coloring.

Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The illustrations in this coloring book are so deliciously sweet you may end up with a cavity in your tooth!   There are sweet little fairies, angels, mermaids and witches to color.   As well as the fantasy girls there are also some whimsical girls as well to color.

Each illustration contains an abundance of other elements to color in and set a scene.  You will find mushrooms, flowers, cute animals and a few pumpkins for Halloween.

On each illustration you will notice that only the small dots for eyes have been drawn in.     Molly gives her whimsical characters a featureless face.    This could be so you can draw your own features in or so the colorist can concentrate on the outfit and other elements without being distracted.    Or it could be something else entirely!

Molly Harrison excels at drawing hair.  Not only in this book but in her other books and digital stamps you will see how much detail and texture she uses on the hair of her characters.   For colorists this is a blessing because she has done the hard work, and it is now just a matter of following those lines to create your effects.

Some of the line art has a sketchy look to it and is not as refined as other pages within the book.     Generally though the line art is very crisp and black and easy to read.   Colorists that have a minor visual impairment should not have any difficulty.  Although there are other elements on the page, these tend to be large with open spaces making it easier for colorists that have a minor visual impairment or motor impairment to color.

About the author

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
