Hansel and Gretel: An Amazing Colouring Book Review

I love the story of Hansel and Gretel ..but what I love more is that house made of candy! I really would like a house like that, if you get hungry you just nibble around a window sill. The closest I’ve come to achieving this dream house was years ago, building a gingerbread house for Christmas and decorating it. I used the cooks method of one candy for the house and one for me. It was a delicious project 🙂

Cover & Layout

Fabiana Attansio always creates the cutest fairy tale based coloring books for us to enjoy. The format is always the same, with a lovely fold out card cover. The cover features a collage of images from the book, partially colored with a sprinkling of gold foil highlights on the front and back and fold out cover.

The spine on Hansel and Gretel is a lovely teal green. Each of Fabiana’s books has a different colored spine, making it easy to find on the bookshelf.
The back cover continues the collage of colored images featuring the wicked witch and woodland animals.

The book measures 26cm x 21.5cm.

Ancillary Pages

A plain text title page commences the book. On the reverse of this there is a double page extended title page framed in sweet goodies

The fabulous thing about these coloring books is that they are part coloring book and part story book. This makes them a real keepsake book, in my opinion, something that you can color for a family and with the family. The story is a five page abridged version of the original fairy tale with lovely images to accompany it.

The preceding pages are the only place where you can test out your mediums.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on white, medium quality paper on both sides of the paper.

There are 40 double page scenes where the line art does run to the spine of the book. The binding in the book lays down quite easily with just a few gentle pushes making it easy to color tricky areas near the spine.

Hansel and Gretel Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

Fabiana continues her style of drawing cute and sweet images to depict her fairy tale characters. Even the wicked witch has the appearance of a kindly old woman.

You will find all the illustrations that you would expect to depict Hansel and Gretel. Starting at their home in the woods there are lovely stone work and nature scenes to color. A glimpse of their home life provides interior scenes to color. Fabiana manages in a few line strokes to portray the anxiety of their father and Hansel and Gretel’s emotions being alone in the woods.

Of course, my favorite scenes are those that are sugar laden. The double page scene of the candy house makes my mouth water and like Hansel and Gretel, I want to gobble it all up 🙂

Colorists wanting to practice techniques will find a multitude of textures to color including stone, timbers, nature, skin and hair, clothing, gems, metals and of course sweet treats.

If you have a minor visual impairment the crisp, black line art is easy to see. On the whole a medium weight has been used with a finer line for detail. About half of the book contains very detailed pictures that may be too challenging for those with a minor visual impairment. The remainder have larger elements that are generally easier to see to color in.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
