Eriy Colouring Calendar – 2018 Review

As most readers know I am a huge fan of Eriy, the Japanese toothpick artist that gave us the imaginary world of Cocot found in the Romantic Country series of coloring books and more recently Tracing Around the World.     In addition, to producing coloring books Eriy also has a line of merchandise, sadly some of which is only available in Japan (I want a tote bag!).

There are some products that are available to international colorists that color as well including jigsaw puzzles and calendars.

As I still have calendars from <cough> 2016 that I haven’t got to coloring yet .. I did not plan to buy Eriy’s 2018 calendar.    However, as often is the case, my willpower is weak and when Sharlene talked about the calendar in my Facebook group I found it hard …impossible to resist.

Format

The coloring calendar arrived in a roll that has to be unrolled and flattened out.    The good news is that it flattens out quite quickly even without a heavy item on it.

Eriy’s coloring calendar is over sized and a lot larger than I had anticipated from viewing it online.      It measures 54cm x 38cm including the top binding.

The front of the calendar features the 2018 title to distinguish it from earlier calendars issued by Eriy.    It is surrounded by 18 colored segments from images featured in the calendar.

The calendar that I purchased features imagery from Romantic Country.

There is a page for each month of the year which features a colored image for the month at the top of the calendar.    On the facing page the line art for the colored image has been printed.    The art work, thankfully, is in the brown/black dull outline that features in Eriy’s Romantic Country coloring books rather than the faint line from Tracing Around the World.

The pages are perforated for easy removal.

Personally,  as I am sooooo slow at coloring anything I probably won’t use it as a calendar but rather I’ll cut the images out and use them as posters or if I get very crafty, maybe laminate them and use them as placemats.

Pencil Mediums

In the video above,  I tested out a variety of brands of mediums that I had to hand.  As the paper is different from normal paper that we are used to in coloring books my success was limited.   I found that my  copic alcohol markers didn’t respond well on the paper making blending of them difficult.    My colored pencils seemed to burnish quite quickly and appear scratchy on the surface.      The medium that I found most suitable for this paper was my Neocolor II water colors applied with a water brush.   For the balance of the pictures I will use a variety of water activated products like my Neocolor II, Tombow, Zig Clean Brush and Inktense.

Where to buy Eriy Coloring Calendar for 2018

The coloring calendar is printed in Japan and to my knowledge there is not an English edition of it available.

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
