The Chronicles of Narnia – Colouring Book Review

I adore fairy tales, especially the old classics like the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Who hasn’t wanted to slip into their wardrobe one day and find themselves in another world?

The Chronicles of Narnia coloring book “contains the original art work from all seven stories in The Chronicles of Narnia”. In this beautiful coloring book you will find centaurs, fauns and, of course, Aslan the great lion.

Cover & Layout

The book cover is white semi gloss with partially colored images from the story. Some copper highlights used in the title and a few elements on the cover give it some polish. The book measures approximately 28cm x 22cm (approximately 11 in x 8.7 in).

The title page features the lion only from the cover image.

Illustrations have been printed on both sides of the paper. The paper is white and medium quality.

Chronicles of Narnia – story snippets and patterns

It is a shame, I think, that the inner and back covers have not been printed on to give more flair to a classic fairy tale.

Illustrations

As with most of the coloring books that are reprints of the original illustrations, there is a “sketchy”, hand drawn feeling about the art work.

More than half of the book contains double page scenes (54 pages) with the balance being snippets from the story and one page illustrations. A lot of the double page scenes consist of patterns, which may prove repetitive over time, but still provide some variety.

Chronicles of Narnia detailed hatching, shadowing

Some illustrations have a lot of detailed hatching, shadowing

The snippets from the book have been created in an outline font, so you can color the text.  These quotes are generally surrounded by other elements or patterns within the book.

You will also find some illustrations and text with a solid black background for further variety.

The line art varies throughout the book in terms of clarity. Black line work has been used for these illustrations with a variation between a fine, medium and heavy weight. Some illustrations have a crisper display than others.

Chronicles of Narnia

Many illustrations have a real “hand drawn” feel to them

Many of the illustrations have pre-printed shadowing, cross hatching and textures added.    Visually, this can be difficult to see, and you may need a magnifying lamp if you have minor visual impairment.

The single page illustrations, on the whole, have been nicely centered on the page making it easy to color away from the spine area.    However, the double page spreads all have elements to be colored in the spine area.   With some pushing, I was able to make the book lay down flat enough to color these areas.

Chronicles of Narnia

Some illustrations have a lot of shading and detail

All of the illustrations in the book have been orientated in a portrait position.

Most of the illustrations fill the entire page and contain a lot of detail.  Many illustrations have fine detailed elements that may be complex or challenging for some colorists.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
