Yonat Katzir – Coloring Book Review

This is the first coloring book that I have purchased from an artist based in Israel. As usual, it was the cover that enticed me. The gorgeous bunny rabbit, surrounded by whimsical design, featuring flowers and a little bird.

Prior to purchasing the book, I queried the artist on what the name of the book was called. She promptly replied back – “Coloring Book”. For that reason, I have included the artist’s name in the title. I hope, one day, she gives it the whimsical title that it deserves.

I ordered the book and expected that it would take some time to ship to Australia. It did not. In fact it arrived some two days earlier than the expected 2 weeks delivery.

The book was beautifully packaged which complimented the handmade nature of the item. It had a beautiful outer envelope that protected the inner envelope containing the book. The inner envelope was finished with a paper doily, ribbon and tag to complete the book. The back of the envelope features an inspirational stamp. I receive packages everyday. Usually, they are bland, brown boxes. It was a special treat for me receiving something so clearly handmade and hand packaged.

Cover & Layout

The book is A5 size approximately 21 cm x 15 cm (approximately 8.5in x 6.75 in). It contains 24 original illustrations.

The book has a lovely card cover and although some of the cover image has been pre-printed, there are still plenty of things that you could color both front and back. The inside cover is leaf green and is a nice touch to the book, giving it an extra layer of interest.

When I opened the book I had my first surprise. In fact, I had to think about it for a minute……it’s the first book that I ever have bought that has the images on the left hand side!

As I am a righty, I found the concept a little confusing at first (now I know how the leftys must feel on a daily basis). I presume that the book follows the Hebrew way of reading from right to left, and that this applies to illustrations as well.

The right to left confusion matters little because when coloring I tend to move the picture around anyway. In addition, although the book does not contain perforated pages, there is a nice dotted line to cut the image out with.

Yonat Katzir Coloring Book – variety of whimsical illustrations

Illustrations

The paper used to create this little book is lovely. It is white and smooth and at least a medium weight if not perhaps more. It is not card stock.

The line work on the illustrations is black ranging from a fine to medium weight line. I have no difficult seeing the line work without my glasses on 🙂

There are different levels of complexity within the drawings. Some have fine details while others have larger spaces suitable for those, like me, that detest too many fiddly bits.

The illustrations are beautiful. I love rabbits. I love whimsical. This book didn’t disappoint on either count. Some of these illustrations I could imagine framed in a child’s nursery. Others would be suitable for framing and giving as gifts to adults.

I made a terrible mistake when I purchased this book. I was tossing up whether to  buy some greeting cards as well (I love cards!). I decided not to as I hadn’t seen this artist’s work before. What a mistake! I’m smacking myself now.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
