Whimsical Children’s Fantasies Coloring Book Review
I would love to be a child again and enjoy the days spent dreaming of imagined lands and places. That’s probably why I love coloring books so much. Pure escapism. I don’t even need to color them in to be transported to a place with no responsibility, bills or mundane daily life. Add in a dash of whimsy and I am truly happy. The title of this coloring book attracted my attention because it plays on my love of whimsical drawings and my need to daydream.
Cover & Layout
The glossy front cover of this book features a whimsical girl with fish sprouting from her waves of hair. The drawing is partially colored with a splash type effect across the main design.
The back cover of the book is a muddy olive/brown look with some floral based elements on it. I do feel that the artist has missed the opportunity here to showcase some of the designs in the book in thumbnail form and choose a more whimsical color background.
Whimsical Children’s Fantasies is A4 sized measuring in at 28cm x 21.5 cm (11 in x 8.5 in). It features a glossy soft cover.
On opening Whimsical Children’s Fantasies you will find a plain dedication page, with copyright page on the reverse. This is then followed by a cute page introducing the book. This also features some elements that you can color in. On the next page there is a well designed color test page which also features some cute line art to color in. All of these ancillary pages are excellent spots to test out your mediums and see how they perform.
The illustrations are printed on white, trade stock paper with one image per page. As always, it is recommended that some scrap paper is inserted behind the page you are working on to avoid bleed through or shadowing.
There are 36 illustrations in the book. The bulk of the images have been orientated portrait style with 14 images orientated landscape style.
The drawings are gorgeous and full of whimsy. You will find cutesy animals dressed up, big eyed girls, robotics, buildings, and nature scenes. All of the images are presented in a whimsical “kids” style making this book suitable for all ages.
The artist has framed each drawing in a medium weight border. This means that the actual drawings are smaller than the book size, being approximately 23.5cm x 18cm. This provides a nice area of space around each image and ensures that the line art will not be damaged if you pin to a clipboard to color.
All of the art work has been nicely centered on the page and each piece is well balanced.
The artist has used a bright, crisp, black to outline the work and visually it is very easy to see and adds an extra “pop” to the art. The line weight is medium further enhancing the ease of coloring. Some texture has been added to some drawings with a fine line weight.
As the images are framed, there are no issues with images abutting the spine area of the book. The book lays flat with some coaxing.
There is a nice range of detail within the drawings. Whilst many images have a lot of fine details there are still elements within a picture with larger spaces for those that do not like too much detail. A lot of the images with finer details could also be colored as a wash rather than in detail for those colorists with visual impairment.
The last page of the book advises colorists of a Facebook Group you can join to connect with the artist and share your colored works.
