The Time Garden A5 Notebook – Review
As most of you already know, I’m a huge fan of Daria Song. I adore her detailed illustrations and modern day fairy. When I seen that some related merchandise was being released to compliment The Time Garden Coloring Book, I had to have it! The coloring products produced by this talented Korean artist to me full within the category of “classic” coloring books. They will always be timeless, and always enjoyable to color whether now or 10 years from now.
New merchandise that has been released, at the time of writing comprises: an A5 notebook, a Memory Book and Desk Pads. The current range of products is produced by Go Stationery a UK group who are also selling through Ebay and Amazon. I imagine, more products will be released soon. Penguin are also releasing products with The Time Garden theme including notecards (must get these!), a Journal and a Diary.
I adore notebooks, so it was a very easy decision for me to order the A5 notebook. It measures approximately 21.5 cm x 14.5 cm and is the perfect size for popping in your handbag.
The cover reflects the English version of the Time Garden coloring book. There is a lovely design of the tree with pre printed blue and green and foil highlights. The cover is matt and you could color this in if you wished. On the inside and back cover you will find a pattern of stars that fans of the main coloring book will be familiar with.
There are approximately 40 illustrations within the book. Some of the illustrations comprise patterns that although are not repeats are very similar. These patterns comprise florals, stars and cogs. The main illustrations have not been duplicated and remain true to the theme.
The line work is fine and black. I had no trouble seeing the lines without the benefit of my glasses. Always a good sign for me.
The notebook proper consists wholly of dark grey ruled lines. Some colorists may have preferred a mix of blank and ruled lines. Personally, I’m happy with just ruled lines. I would have liked to see some elements of illustrations on the ruled pages to add a little more panache.
The book is fastened with a thin, dainty black elastic. The elastic reminds me of a hair tie from my school days. Although the elastic compliments the art work of The Time Garden, I would have preferred something a bit sturdier, like the elastic used on the Animorphia notebook.
The paper is notebook paper. I am quite satisfied with the quality of the paper within the notebook as it is, after all, a notebook. It would have been good if there was a fold out card cover that could be used between pages but as there is not, I would put a piece of card between the pages I wished to color, to avoid denting and bleed through. One small problem with the book, is that it is difficult to lay it down flat. As the illustrations run to the spine of the book it may be difficult to color.
Overall, I am very happy with my notebook and look forward to coloring it in soon!
