Tidevarv Coloring Book  Review

Hanna Karlzon has published coloring books that colorists consistently love and adore.   Her knack of  being able to inject each page with a magical element makes fans excited to see everything that she produces.  Every time I think I know which of  her coloring books is my favorite, she releases a new one and I become totally confused as to which one I love the most.    I’ve come to the conclusion that like a mother with her children,  I can’t choose one favorite and love them all.

Tidevarv translated into English means Seasons which describes the content of the book.    Tidevarv has been collated with images representing each season throughout the book starting at Spring and ending in Winter.

Cover & Layout

Out of the massive amount of coloring books that I own this is the first one that I have that has a lemon cover.     I had thought that I could live without the Swedish edition of this book as the cost of shipping to Australia was so high but I had to have that lemon cover 🙂

As always, the cover is hardback with beautiful black cloth binding and gold lettering consistent with all of Hanna’s previous coloring books.     The cover features gold foil highlights on both front and back.

Matt black protective pages feature at the front and back of the book.

Ancillary Pages

The book opens with a title page and decorative element to color.  Over leaf you will find copyright information and a cute bee to color.    These pages would be the best places to test out your mediums before you embark on the coloring book proper.

An elaborate nameplate page follows filled with mushrooms and florals to color in.

Layout

Illustrations are printed on both sides of the off white, medium quality paper.    There are 18 pages that feature double page scenes within the book.     The bulk of the double page spreads have been cleverly positioned to ensure that there is minimal line art near the spine of the book.

The coloring nook is laying down reasonably well, considering it is a new book.    With time I am confident that it will relax more for ease of coloring.    As the book has the addition of a stitched binding if it did not loosen enough I could easily snip one of the stitches to loosen it further, but I double that would be necessary.

Tidevarv Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The seasonal theme of Tidevarv has really brought out a beautiful array of illustrations from Hanna representing the changes in weather.    In addition, a lot of the playfulness that was present in Magical Dawn has been carried over to Tidevarv with elaborate bottles featuring fog and sunbeams.

The theme of a key being present in Hanna’s art work is present in this book and like her crowned animals really are  her signature style.   Colorists will have a lot of fun coloring the gems, rock crystals and glass bottles.

Each season commences with a lovely bottle that features a phrase that relates to the season.

The Spring chapter of the book features highly decorates birds and insects, gorgeous crowned animals with elaborate gems and an array of cute critters including gorgeous little chicks.

Hanna has featured a number of strong women within her book that have elaborate elements added like floral headdresses

Summer features more beautiful women and my favorite in this part is the woman with a birds nest in her hair.  Cute houses, elaborate flowers fo all varieties, birds, insects and crowned fish all make an appearance in Summer.    Summer is a favorite chapter with me,  the double page spread of a woman with flowers and strawberries in her hair is just divine as are the two gorgeous  kitties with floral headdresses and jewels.

Autumn features  mushrooms, spiders, and seasonal produce all created in Hanna’s distinctive style.   Even Halloween has been represented with a gorgeous witch profile picture and cheeky jack o lanterns.

In Winter the line art features more candles, lanterns, cute critters and Christmas inspired imagery.

As usual, Hanna’s line art is outstanding.  Black, crisp lines make it easy to see and color the pictures in.    The illustrations are nicely positioned on the page for ease of coloring and have a great balance of elements within them.   One of the things that makes Hanna’s books so attractive is the variety of images that make it possible to practice so many techniques.    Skin and hair,  fur, jewels, crystals and glass as well as gorgeous flowers abound in the book making it a fun book for those learning coloring techniques and for those that already have those skills.

About the author

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
