Only Story – Coloring Book Review

Only Story has a quirky cover that I found very enticing with its curvy buildings and swirly designs. I didn’t know what to expect from this coloring book but thought it related to the story of Aladdin. The back cover has a picture of an Aladdin type figure on a magic carpet ride over a quirky township.

I was wrong about it being the story of Aladdin 🙂 It appears to be a mix of fairy tales including Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Wizard of Oz, Around the world in 80 days, Peter Pan, Little Red Riding Hood, Thumbelina, Alice in Wonderland and many others.

Cover & Layout

The cover has a white glossy dust jacket on it which sets off the vibrant pre printed colors beautifully.   A bright pink spine compliments the colors on the dust jacket.   There is some line work that you could color on the front cover, but very little on the back.    Inside the book cover proper has a kraft card cover with some line work on it on both the front and the back.    The front cover is repeated as line work for the title page in the book.

The book measures 25cm x 25cm (approximately 9.7 in x 9.7in).

Although the book is thick sadly most of it cannot be colored.   The book is written in Korean and I am unable to translate it.   It would seem that each set of coloring pages that belongs to a particular fairy tale is preceded with some text about that tale.   This is only my assumption 🙂   A lot of the pages are taken up with text, with only a few filigree elements to color on them.    The actual coloring pages in the book only totals 50.    The 50 coloring pages comprise double page scenes totaling 43 with the balance being single page scenes.

On the reverse of the illustrations you will find the text pages.   This means that you can safely use  your wet mediums without ruining a reverse image.

The paper is white and at least medium quality if not higher.

Illustrations

The illustrations depict scenes from  some of the most famous fairy tales in the world.    There is a wide selection of fairy tales covered but really too few images for my liking.  I would have preferred to see more pictures from each fairy tale and less text in the book.

Many of the illustrations comprise double page scenes and the illustration does run to the spine of the book.   This is always a tricky area to color in but the book does lay flat pretty easily with some gentle persuasion.

The line work is black and very crisp in the book.     The line weight varies from fine to medium and is visually very easy to see.

There are a number of illustrations with larger areas of space suitable for all colorists but the bulk of the images have finer details that may be too complex for some colorists to enjoy.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
