Seasons Coloring Book  Review

Seasons Coloring Book by Hanna Karlzon is the English edition of her popular Tidevarv Coloring Book.   Tidevarv was released earlier this year as a Swedish edition.   Thankfully, English publishers Gibbs Smith acquired the rights to publish this book in English.    The English imprint makes it more accessible and affordable to Hanna’s worldwide fans.

Naturally, I know some people will ask which book they should buy.    Personally,  I collect books from around the world so naturally I had to have the Swedish edition.    Saying that,  I have no intention of coloring in the Swedish book at the moment.   I have been waiting patiently for the English imprint to color.    My reason for that is simple.    I’m only a beginner and, for me, I know I’m going to make oodles of mistakes.    I’d rather make my mistakes in the English edition which is far cheaper for me to replace, than the Swedish one which is far more expensive.

If you live in Sweden or within that area,  you may find it is more cost effective to purchase the Swedish edition.  If you are in the US/UK or Australia you may find that the English edition is far more affordable and readily obtainable at the links below.

As to quality,   Gibbs Smith do an excellent job of publishing editions from our favorite Swedish artists.    You will find that the paper is the same or very similar quality to that in Tidevarv.    The cover is beautiful as well and, other than color, replicates the same cover as Tidevarv.

There is one difference between the two.   Tidevarv weighs more than Seasons and, it is my belief,  although it has not been confirmed,  that a different material was used in the cover of Tidevarv  from that used in Seasons.    The page count is the same, the paper weight feels the same and although the Seasons cover looks thicker, I suspect it is made of lighter material.      In the scheme of things, very minor differences.  As I felt Tidevarv was heavier than Seasons I weighed both books.    Tidevarv weighs 606 gm and Seasons 578 gm.

You can see my original review of Tidevarv here which has links to purchase from the Swedish outlet.

Cover & Layout

I really, really wanted the cover of  Seasons to be lemon to match the Tidevarv coloring book.     Perhaps,  I am a bit ocd about these things, but I do like the books to match 🙂    My other reason for really wanting lemon was that when I look at my shelves it’s a color that just doesn’t seem to represented that well.    It would be nice to have a little more of that sunshine color on my bookcase.

Seasons coloring book, has a blue cover which is inconsistent with the Swedish edition and the covers previously used on Hanna’s English editions.

The cover is lovely and forms a nice background for the cover ar,t which is the same as shown on Tidevarv both front and back.

Seasons has the same measurements as Tidevarv measuring in at 21cm x 25cm approximately.

Other than the color change on the cover and the text translated to English, the book is the same as Tidevarv.

Ancillary Pages

Double black matte protective pages are at the start and end of the book protecting the line art.

A simple title page with an element to color starts the book.  Copyright information is on reverse.    This is a great spot to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper.

A full page nameplate page starts the book.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on both sides of the medium quality, off white paper.  The paper feels the same weight or similar to that used in Tidevarv and other Swedish coloring books by the same artist.

In the book there is one page in my copy where the page binding seems a little off.    As you can see from the image below, there is some line art that does not belong on either this image or the facing page.

line art at the edge of the spine shows a problem with the binding on this page

This is the only image that has that issue and does not detract from my enjoyment of the book.

Seasons Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

As the title implies,  Seasons depicts the four seasons of nature with accompanying illustrations.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
