Playful Puppies Coloring Book  Review

I love the art work that Marjorie Sarnat produces for the Creative Haven line of coloring books.      I always think of  Creative Haven books as very good value for the price point for colorists.     Marjorie’s artwork that always revolves around some adorably cute animal is charming and sweet.     The pages with their patterns on them allow you to be creative with blending and technique or just color solid for fun.

As I am the owner of two adorable dogs and a huge fan of Marjorie’s work, there was no question that I would purchase this book.

You can see some of Marjorie’s other books below too:

Cover & Layout

Creative Haven have a set format for their coloring books which they have followed for this book too.    A glossy soft cover features a colored image from the book on the front and a partially colored image on the reverse.

As always, there are 31 images to color in the book and they all follow the same theme of  cute puppies.

Ancillary Pages

The inside front and back covers feature a colored image from the book.    I adore these inspirational colored images as they do help me choose colors (which I find very difficult to do).

The title page has a scaled down image to color if you wished.    This is the best place to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper and your coloring style.

Layout

Each illustration is printed on single sided, perforated paper.     The paper is white and in between trade stock and medium in weight.   As the images are printed on one side,  you can pop a blotter between the pages and color with wet mediums like markers if you wished.

All of the art work fills the page and has been framed in a border.    As there is a border,  the images do not abut the spine making them easier to color in.    As the pages are perforated, they can be removed easily to color at your workspace or clipboard.

Playful Puppies Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

In Playful Puppies coloring book Marjorie has included a variety of different breeds of dogs.   There are both long haired and short haired dogs and different poses and expressions.   Some puppies are face only and some are full bodied.

Marjorie’s work always features a lot of detail on the animal with patterns, little outfits or cute bows adorning the puppies.      As well as the detail on the focal point,  there is also a lot of detail in the background elements with each page forming a lovely scene.

Marjorie’s work is pure fun and escapism with images that colorists that love cute animals would enjoy.

The line art is black and crisp and very easy to see.    However, colorists with a minor visual impairment may find that due to the amount of elements on a page it may be difficult to color.

About the author

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

  • Have you reviewed Pampered Pets by Creative Haven?
Which would you say was your favourite of her books? I love all things cats so my favourite is the cats/kittens one, would have liked to see a variety of different breeds though- long haired, short-haired. I love these books they’re great when you just want to colour with marker pens like a kid!

    • I have Pampered Pets but haven’t reviewed it. I don’t really have a favorite, I like all of Marjories work – her pictures are always a lot of fun but sometimes I can get muddled because they are so detailed. Usually because I don’t put my glasses on lol! Happy coloring x
