A Million Dogs Coloring Book Review

This is my type of book.  I love animals, dogs, cats, rabbits you name it (except creepy crawlies).  I love cute and whimsical.    Combine them together and we have  “A Million Dogs”.     This is the latest book by talented illustrator Lulu Mayo.

I call the book pup sized because it is handbag sized.  It measures approximately 23cm x  18cm ( approximately 7 in x  8.9 in).   The card cover is vibrant with pre printed yellow, red and pink highlighted with gold foil.     The cover is replicated as the title page at the commencement of the book.   The copyright page is adorable with a double page spread depicting a variety of dogs in a garden full of pumpkin houses.

Inside the illustrations to follow are adorable.    What I am particularly pleased to see is that the dogs are of different breeds and in different poses.   There are fluffy dogs, hairy dogs, short haired dogs and dogs with attitude.  I have fallen for these dogs that eye off cakes (I have the same look in my eyes), that take hot air balloon rides and join the circus.    I never thought it possible to make a dog mandala that was cute and colorable.   Lulu has proven me wrong on this, several times.    There is a range of designs as well with most spreading across both pages and only some single sided illustrations.

The paper is white and smooth and very good quality.   I would test it with your brand markers first on the introductory pages to check for bleed through.

The line work is black and crisp ranging from fine to medium.    I had no difficulty seeing the lines without my reading glasses on.    If you have visual impairment there are perhaps two illustrations that may be difficult to color out of the book due to the fine lines.     With my magnifying lamp I was able to see those lines without problems.

I love that the illustrations have a lot of variety in not only subject matter but complexity.  There are many images with large spaces on them that are suitable for those, like me, that do not like coloring fiddly bits.    Skilled colorists will appreciate these larger spaces to create texture and dimension with their coloring and shading.

The book is stitch and tends to fold down flat with just a gentle prod making it easy to color in the spine area.   The illustrations, for the majority cover the spine area of the book or come close to it.  However, as the book lays down flat these areas should not cause difficulty when coloring.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
