“Jungla Cósmica” Colouring Book Video Review

I hope you enjoyed the video review of  Jungla Cosmica

“Jungla Cósmica” Colouring Book Review

The stunning cover on Jungla Cósmica drew me in when I first seen it online.     As I was unfamiliar with Catalina Estrada, I then visited her website and was stunned and amazed by her vibrant designs.     If you are also unfamiliar with Catalina Estrada’s work I really encourage you to visit her website.  You will see the amazing bed linen, stationery, baggage and other items that Catalina designs and illustrates.   What I am most intrigued with is her use of color.    The vibrancy of her works makes you feel that you are in a tropical hideaway,  even on a chilly day.

Cover & Layout

The cover of Jungla Cosmica is matte laminate with a fold out card.    The partial colored line art features vibrant jungle birds and flowers with a cheetah in the corner.    The color choices and combinations are stunning and give an overall elegant effect.    The uncolored line art on the cover features the reverse image of the colored line art so you can see how the same piece of art looks colored in.     One thing that you will notice, if you pay attention to covers, is the variation in line weight where some elements are lightly outlined in grey while others are distinctive in crisp black.

Gold foil features on the title and artist name and has been strategically placed on elements throughout the cover piece.

The book measures approximately 25cm x 25cm.

A hot pink spine complements the cover art with yellow text.

The back cover features the same design as the front in both colored and uncolored works.  It also features the gold foil highlights.   You could imagine coloring this in with your markers and framing it somewhere it really is beautiful.

A repeat of the design is also featured on the fold out flap.     This section does not have any gold foiling on it.

The inner card cover also features line art,  this time cheeky monkeys are there for you to color in.

Ancillary Pages

A plain text title page introduces the book with copyright information on the reverse.   This would be the best spot to test out your mediums and see how they react with the paper and your coloring style.   An extended title page follows which features the cover art from the book in line art form for you to color in.  A two page introduction follows, in Spanish.    An elaborate two page nameplate follows with a double page scene for you to color in.

At the end of the book there is also a page about the artist, adorned with some cute birds and leaves for you to color in.   The reverse of this is blank which would make a good spot to create color palettes.

Layout

The art work has been printed on both sides of the white medium quality paper.   All of the images have been orientated portrait style.     There are 56 pages that comprise a double page scene within the book and the balance being single page pieces of art.   You will also find that there are  15  pages with a pre printed black background.

“Jungla Cósmica” Colouring Book Images & Illustrations

To really appreciate the art work of  Catalina Estrada you really do have to see her website with her colored designs on it.    The sense of color that this artist has will inspire you when coloring this book.   Without seeing her finished designs you may not see the potential in this book.

Although the book is based on Jungle life, to me it really is more tropical.     There are beautiful tropical birds, butterflies and dragonflies throughout the book.   Exotic flowers and plant life adorn each page.   There are not as many larger animals as I would like to see in a book based on Jungle theme.   We have the head of a cheetah and a few smaller ones and some tigers but the art predominantly features bird life.

The line art used in this book is very different from most coloring books.   The artist has used a fine black line to outline most of the art work within an image.    Other elements that you may wish to blend, shade or apply a different color to are outlined in a fine, grey line so that when colored it will disappear into the picture rather than be contained within a black edge.

The bulk of the single sided imagery contains elements from the picture on one side in a limited format and then on the facing page in a more detailed format.      As you can see from the images above the same art work is presented in two different styles.

Although images do run to the spine in the double page scenes the binding is very good.    Just from a few openings of the book mine is now laying down like a tired toddler.  It is not perfect lay flat binding, but is very good.

All of the art work has been well centered and positioned on the page for ease of coloring and framing.      Colorists will however lose the reverse image if they choose to remove the page from the book to frame.

Often this type of art work can look a little plain in a flip through and it is not until you see it colored that you realize how stunning it is.

About the author

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

    • It is a gorgeous book Connie! Her colored bed linen and stationery is so beautiful! I fell in love with it completely. I have itchy fingers to order some of the linen for our new house when we move. It won’t be for a while yet, but I can imagine that it would look great. Stay tuned, I have another from the same artist next week 🙂 Happy coloring x
