Jim Shore – Background

Artist Jim Shore is well known for his figurines and work with Disney. His beautifully detailed Christmas ornaments and nativity scenes are known around the world and are highly collectible. His art, often expressed as vibrantly painted folk art, produces unique and recognizable designs. Jim Shore’s first coloring book is based on folk art angel designs. Angels feature heavily in Jim’s work and the Jim Shore Christmas Angels are very well known. The angels compiled into this collection are some of his favorites produced as a handy coloring book.

Jim Shore Angel Coloring Book Review

Inside this lovely book with a glossy card cover you will find 50 beautiful folk art style angels. The book measures approximately 25.5cm x 21.5cm (approximately 10 in x 8.5 in). The cover is glossy and contains a partially colored image on it.

After a plain title page there is a small note from Jim and then the illustrations follow. The title page will be a good spot to test out any wet mediums that you are using. The paper quality is very good. The illustrations have been printed on white paper of medium weight which is perforated. The majority of the illustrations are printed in portrait view but there are some landscape designs.

Angels are presented in all types, often the clothing is decorated with country scenes, quotes and flowers. There is a range of difficulty level among the drawings with very detailed nativity scenes contrasted with simple stars or geometric designs. There are some images within the book that contain a group of angels within the image (these are my favorite).

All of the illustrations contain a fine border around the image making it ideal for framing. The angel sits beautifully centered on the page with a variety of backgrounds, giving a stained glass window type effect. Many of the illustrations are particularly suited for Christmas gift giving or decoration while others would suit particularly well for those interested in spirituality or for those that are recently bereaved.

The book does not lay down completely flat without force at the three quarter mark.  However, as the pages are perforated it is easy enough to remove them from the book and color on a clipboard or your favorite surface.

As an added bonus in this book, at the rear you will find 3 pages of illustrated elements printed on white cardstock. These elements relate to a particular image within the book and are to be colored, attached with craft tape to create a 3d element to the picture. The page that the element relates to is numbered near the image. This would produce a tole like look and would look particularly beautiful in a frame.

The line work is black for the main illustration and border throughout the book. The “stained glass type” background to the images is in light grey. The line weight is medium for the majority of the book with some finer line weight for detailed illustrations. I had no difficulty seeing the lines without my glasses on.

I do like that there is a variety in images. Some illustrations contain large spaces which are ideal for those that have visual impairment and for those that perhaps suffer from arthritis or other illnesses that affect motor skills.

The only niggle that I had with this book was the lack of detail in the front section of the book. With an artist of Jim Shore’s standard, I would have expected an elegant nameplate page and title page. Small niggles in an otherwise beautiful book.

I hope that this is not the last coloring book from Jim Shore I would really like to see a coloring book based on the Jim Shore Christmas ornaments and, of course, fairies that Jim Shore has crafted and designed.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
