Halloween Cats Coloring Book  Review

Most readers know that I am very fond of kitty cats and Deborah Muller’s coloring books.  Combine the two and I am a happy camper!   The only thing that would make me happier is if my order had not been lost in the post for two months 🙁   I would have liked to see my kitty book earlier, but at least Amazon were super fast at replacing it.

Halloween is starting to get popular in recent years in Australia.  It’s certainly not of the level that it is overseas, but I can see that this will be soon a real event on the calendar here.     To get into the spirit,  I looked around my house to see what I had Halloween wise.   Cobwebs in abundance …but I’m leaving them as decorations rather than as household failures 🙂

On my coloring book shelves, in the “Halloween” section there was very little.  Last year at Halloween time I had been slowly recovering from being sick and hadn’t got into the spirit to any great extent. I realised on looking over all my pretties,  I didn’t have a large selection of Halloween books.    So off to the Amazon shops I went.    It was an easy choice for me to choose the kitty cat book because with that theme I can color it outside of the festive season.  As it is more animal based it gives a variety to the more skeleton and ghouls range that I already have as well.   Halloween Cats is also a great choice for me because I do tend to scare easily 🙂

Cover & Layout

The soft cover features a mostly black kitty cat in witches hat with other Halloween elements surrounding it.    It really stands out on the white background with some line art elements showing so yu instantly know this is a coloring book.

On the back cover the Chubby Mermaid design is featured together with a short blurb about other coloring books in the Chubby Mermaid art range.

There are many things that I like about Deborah Muller’s art work but the primary one is the sense of fun.     Coloring should be fun and these images always portray that no matter if it is ghouls or mermaids.

Halloween Cats is roughly A4 sized measuring in at 8.5 in x 11 in

Ancillary Pages

The front of the book contains a lovely nameplate page.   It is decorated with a gorgeous sun, butterflies and rose.    Although it is lovely, it doesn’t fit the theme of this book.

At the rear of the book there is a lovely kitty cat in bits and pieces.   You can color the cat and pin it together to make a lovely articulated kitty cat (thank you Lori for reminding of that word!).   This was the first page that I colored in the book and I had a lot of fun with it.      There are no instructions for putting your cat together but  it is self explanatory.    You will need some binder clips in order to join your cat together.   You can see my cat on the video above at the end or in the images below.

You will also find a couple of blank pages at the end of the book to test out your mediums and create color palettes ideas.

Any of the pages above are suitable to test out mediums and markers and see how they react with the paper and your coloring style.

Layout

There are 24 full page  illustrations to color excluding the Ancillary pages refered to above.

Each illustration has been printed on one side of the white, trade stock quality paper.  All images have been framed in a border.

The pages all contain a good balance of art work using the whole of the page for the design.

Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

You will find a lot of fun illustrations in this coloring book.      There are kitties on broomsticks, with ghosts and with other animals.  You will also find cats that are cute, creepy and downright snarly.     Deborah has managed to incorporate different varieties of cats in the book as well as different poses from full figured, face on and side profile.

The great thing about this book is that it is suitable for colorists of all ages and skill levels.   Colorists that know how to blend and add highlights will be able to create beautifully rounded pumpkins and dynamic kittys.  Colorists that are skilled at backgrounds can add some background dazzle to really set the Halloween mood.    For colorists that are new to colorig or prefer to color without using techniques then you will have a great time.   The simply outlined images make it easy to color solidly and achieve a fabulous result in the end.   This makes these books also particularly suitable for colorists of all ages and colorists with a minor visual impairment.

Each page is outlined in a crisp, medium to thick black line making it very easy to see.    Although the pages are packed with detail there are large open areas on the elements making it easier for colorists with a minor visual impairment to color the picture.

There are only a couple of slightly scary images in the book making it suitable for those that are sensitive to ghoulish imagery but wish to take part in the Halloween fun.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
