Elegant Elephants (Day and Night) Coloring Book  Review

Marjorie Sarnat originally released Elegant Elephants Coloring Book back in 2016 which featured her highly decorated elephants on white paper.   She has now updated the book to include the original illustrations printed on a white background as well as duplicate images printed on a black background.

I love the duplication of the images in coloring books (as I tend to make mistakes and want to have a do-over page).   However,  these duplicated images on the black background have a completely different look and feel to them (due to the way that Marjorie has kept the elephant as the focal point and the foreground and background elements feature a white outline).   As soon as I looked at these black backgrounds, I imagined filling those white outlines with bright gel pens.   I can imagine how vibrant and fun they would look against the black background.

Usually, Marjorie Sarnat’s books are published through Creative Haven for Dover Publications. Elegant Elephants, however, has been self-published by Marjorie Sarnat.

Cover & Layout

Elegant Elephants features a gorgeous colored elephant on the cover.   This image has been included in the book for you to color as well.   The image differs from the one used on the original edition of  Elegant Elephants to distinguish the books.

If you sign up to Marjorie’s email list,  you can actually download the image featured on the cover from her site.    You will see at the end of the video above my colored picture that I downloaded from Marjorie’s site.

The back cover features the same design used on the front with the black background.    You can see how different the image looks from the day themed pages.   It’s a clever way of portraying that the book features both white and midnight backgrounds.

Ancillary Pages

There is a cute decorated title page that starts the book featuring both a white background image and black background image.

At the end of the book, you will find Marjorie’s contact details, a list of her books, message from her and a spare page that you could use to test your mediums or choose color palettes.

Layout

Illustrations have been printed on one side only of the trade stock paper.    There are two sets of the same designs in the book.  One set is printed in usual coloring book style with a white background.  The other set of designs is printed on a black background.   These designs because of the way that Marjorie has utilized the white outline on background elements produces a new and completely different coloring page to color.

Art Work

The theme of the coloring book is elephants and fitting with the theme a portion of profits is donated to 96 Elephants a wildlife conservation society.   Of course,  Marjorie’s elephants are drawn in her unique style featuring patterns and decorations and cute imaginative scenes.

A variety of elephant profiles have been included in this coloring book.   You will find elephant families,  full face frontal images, side profiles, half face imagery, romantic couples and highly decorated elephants.

Some of the elephants feature “extras” like fairy wings, headdresses, and crowns.

The elephants are the focal point in each illustration which have all been patterned in Marjorie’s style.  Some may have florals, swirls or doodle based designs.

As well as elephants to color in this coloring book there are also beautiful elements in the background and foreground.   Some of the backgrounds feature gorgeous interiors, other elements of nature, cute animals and decorative patterns.

There is a real sense of playfulness in these coloring pages that will appeal to colorists of all ages and skill levels.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
