Daydreams Coloring Book Review illustrated by Hanna Karlzon

Daydreams is the much anticipated English version of the coloring book, Dagdrommar illustrated by Swedish artist and illustrator, Hanna Karlzon.

Hanna’s work is admired because she manages to inject a dash of magic and sparkle into each of her drawings that transforms them into timeless, classic pieces of art.   Daydreams is a classic coloring book, one of which will never go out of style or fashion.

Daydreams Coloring Book Review

Cover & Layout

The English publishers of Daydreams have gone to a lot of effort to ensure that fans purchasing the English version have no unfair comparisons with the original version of Dagdrommar.   For that reason they have ensured that the beautiful and sturdy hard cover of Daydreams is the same shade of mint green with  intricate line art decorating it.   Just like Dagdrommar, Daydreams features gold foiling for the title and centre of the flowers.   The spine has a beautiful black binding on it with the details in gold foil.   The only difference between this and Dagdrommar is that the foil used on the spine of Daydreams is more rose gold than the gold on the Dagdrommar coloring book.   On the spine of Daydreams the publishers have also added the words “Coloring Book”.

Daydreams measures 21.6 x  25.7 cm (approximately 10 in x 8.5 in).

Daydreams Coloring Book Review

Side by side Daydreams looks slightly fuller than Dagdrommar.   Before you get excited, thinking that extra illustrations have been included, that’s not the case at all.  The hard cover backing used by the English publishers is slightly thicker than the Swedish hard cover backing which makes the book appear plumper.

Inside a lovely black matt protective page introduces you to this beautiful coloring book.  A simple title page with a little mushroom follows for you to color in.  Over page, copyright information is adorned with a little beetle to color.

A beautiful name plate page follows that is a work of art in itself.      All of the images that were in Dagdrommar are in Daydreams and are presented in the same order.  The only difference is that any Swedish text has been translated to English.    Other than the ancillary pages, this comprises a nameplate page and a dedication page, as well as some instructions to draw your own doodles on some images.

Daydreams Coloring Book Review

Gibbs Smith, the publishers of the English edition of Daydreams  went to a lot of effort to ensure the paper was the same in this book as the original edition.  To achieve this goal they ended up sourcing paper from the same plant that produced the original book.      The paper is a delight and appears exactly the same as the original version.

Daydreams is illustrated on both sides of the paper and there is also an artist version which contains 20 illustrations printed on single sided pages, for colorists that prefer wet mediums.

Illustrations

Hanna draws in Indian ink. All of her illustrations have small dots sprinkled throughout elements of an image, giving it a very artistic quality and raising it from an outline of an image to color to  a piece of art on its own.

The concept of Daydreams shouldn’t be so appealing as a coloring book, but it is.   The images are so widely various and not themed to anything that you would think that the whole thing would end up a hodge podge of mess.  Daydreams does the exact opposite.   It enthralls you and draws you into a magical world of elaborately designed insects, oversized birds, cats playing with jewellery, animals in crowns and beautiful women.    You can imagine daydreaming yourself of these beautiful things as you color your way through the pages.

Daydreams Coloring Book Review

The line art in this book is beautiful.   The lines are crisp and black throughout the book.  A medium line weight is generally used throughout making the pages very easy to see and making the images pop on the page.    Some finer, delicate lines have been used to add texture and dimension when required as well as those sprinkling of little dots we see from time to time.

Most of the images are single page illustrations that are well positioned on the page for ease of coloring.  However, there are a handful of illustrations that have line art right to the spine, making it tricky to color.   There are also three images where an outline has been provided so you can doodle a pattern in yourself.   You will also find  14 pages of  double page scenes.     These scenes  have line art that runs into the spine of the book, making it difficult to color.

Daydreams Coloring Book Review

Intricate houses, birds and florals with lots of beautiful details

A number of the illustrations really call for a beautiful background to be added whilst others are so filled with detail that there would be limited room to add a background to the image.

About the author

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

  • This is such a gorgeous colouring book – one of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen. I love the whimsical nature theme of the book, and the women in this book, as you’ve shown, are so beautifully drawn too. Great review! I would love to win this book but if I don’t I will certainly be buying it!

    • It’s a gorgeous classic coloring book and everyone should have one! If I was in charge of the world everyone would get a copy of Daydreams and a box of FC polys 🙂 Keep an eye out tomorrow … there’s a pretty pink one up for grabs as well 🙂 Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck! Happy coloring x

    • Thank you Sandra! Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck! Happy coloring x

  • Wow, Daydreams looks absolutely mesmerizing. Your review is spot on in saying they are timeless pieces of art and won’t go out of fashion. I am also impressed to read the publisher sought out the same paper for the English edition, that shows great dedication. I loved reading your review, and I think this will be high on my wish list now!

    • It’s a gorgeous classic book. Don’t tell my other coloring books or they may get jealous but I have a stash of what to grab in case of an emergency. Lets just say that there’s a few pink and mint green books in that stash 🙂 Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck! Happy coloring x

  • Hi what a delightful book, i tried to post before and it did not come out, sorry about that. I love to color by the hour, being didabled this is a wonderful hobby for me love your reviews. hugs Karen

    • Thanks Karen! Sounds like the interwebs were being naughty! It’s lovely having a hobby that brings you and others so much joy. Just looking at colored pictures and the books makes me happy. Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck! Happy coloring x

    • It is a lovely mix of illustrations isn’t it! I could imagine a story inspired by the book but it may be quite long …there’s a lot of illustrations there 🙂 Happy coloring x and thank you for entering the giveaway!

    • Cats! I <3 cats and that cat is so regal. Plus all those gems, quirky little buildings and beautiful florals. It is just a gorgeous all rounder book! Thanks for entering the giveaway and good luck! P.S. Remember to check out the Summer Nights review - there's a little giveaway for that one as well. Happy coloring x

    • Thank you! Thank you for entering and be sure and check out the Summer Nights review as well…there’s a little giveaway there as well. Happy coloring x

  • Wow what a stunning book, although i favor the original version, the English edition is beautiful as well! Looks like such fun (:

    • It’s lovely to have something in its original edition but, really they are both the same, quality wise. The advantage of the English edition is that the price is a lot less than buying from Sweden and shipping to your country. I always need to have a few deep breaths before I press the order button on International sites. The Australian dollar is just terrible 🙁 At least with the English edition it is much more affordable and more people can enjoy Hanna’s quirky and magical drawings. Happy coloring x

  • Thank you for this review. I hope you review the English editions of Hanna Karlzon’s other books when they’re released.

    • Hi Darryl, the English version of Summer Nights review has been posted and there’s a little giveaway for that as well. Magical Dawn English edition won’t be out until next year but I will have it! Of course, the Swedish version is out earlier and I’ve already got my order placed. We <3 Hanna Karlzon 🙂 Thank you for entering the giveaway and happy coloring x

  • Another excellent review. I really love coloring insects so I am exciting about this book.

    • Lol I could never have imagined a couple of years ago coloring spiders and creepy crawlies and enjoying it! These artists just make it so easy for us to love bugs with all their pretty patterns and jewels and gems! Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck!

  • I must agree with you. This is an absolutely lovely book! I am happy to see that the English version is almost exactly the same as the original. It is disappointing here is the US to have the lesser versions of the Johanna Basford books. Thank you for taking the time that you do to share the books with us!

    • Thanks Heather. I agree it is a shame that JB with all her coloring clout can’t seem to get the publishers to produce similar quality books. Same with Kerby Rosanes. On the plus side The Night Voyage by Daria Song in the English edition is a great book. Hopefully, the publishers will start taking on board the things that are important to colorists. Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck!

    • The book is so beautiful ..I realised the other day that I had forgotten to upload my review of the Dagdrommar postcards which you’ve reminded me I must put on my “to do” list 🙂 You’ll love the cards but ..the book is better 🙂 Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck!

    • It would be lovely to have the set! Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck!

These pages take me way out of my comfort zone/ Guess its time to try something new after 6 months of coloring/ Thank you for thia opportunity Leanne. Absolutely beautiful book. Connie

    • I <3 the cover of Daydreams so different from other books! It's a gorgeous book and has a beautiful whimsical presentation. There's a lot of colored pictures on my Dagdrommar/Daydreams board over at Pinterest to inspire you. I only ever get called Leanne by officials or if I'm in trouble ..everyone else just calls me Lea 🙂

  • Your review is wonderful!! This book looks absolutely gorgeous and it looks like so much fun to color!!! Thank you so much for the chance to win this beautiful book as well! Being disabled, it’s hard to fuel my coloring addiction. I color to help with my stress, depression, anxiety and chronic pain. Being diagnosed at just 12 yrs old with Meniere’s Disease which there is no cure threw me for a loop but I fought as hard as I could as long as I could to try to keep working, and as active as I could. But employers don’t understand when you are fine for a bit and then can’t hear for days to weeks at a time. It also makes me fatigued no matter how much sleep I get. The tinnitus is the worst for me, when it gets bad like I say I can’t hear for days to weeks at a time and coloring helps get me through those lonely feeling times as well. I’m also deaf in my right ear since birth. Coloring is my outlet and helps me get through each day. Happy Coloring everyone!! Keep making beautiful reviews!!

    • Coloring is such a lovely hobby but also so good for us mentally. I hope it is helping you and making life more comfortable for you! Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck! Happy coloring x

  • Please enter me. A tip is I found twistable colored pencils a help. They don’t have to be sharpened and don’t break. Flow smooth and bright.

    • Great tip Jane! Thanks for sharing! This would be particular useful to people with arthritis or problems with their hands that makes that turning motion somewhat painful! Thank you for entering the giveaway and good luck!

    • They are beautiful! I’m so happy that an English publisher picked up rights – making it more affordable for everyone! Good luck in the giveaway!

  • How beautiful! That cat with the crown and all the jewels caught my eye, and the pretty faces with even more jewels. All the artwork is stunning.

  • Would Love to spend my free time coloring in every page of this book. Great illustrations!
