Coloring Books – New Releases – October 2019

My monthly round up of the coloring books to be released that I am looking forward to

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all coloring books being released. Bear in mind, that there are hundreds and hundreds of books being released every month. I cannot possibly keep up with all of them!

This list of new releases is only books that have taken my fancy, and that I think that you may like as well. Due to the high cost of postage for most readers, this list will usually not include International releases.

Many of these books I will be reviewing as part of my coloring book reviews.

Please also bear in mind that different countries often have different publication dates. Something may be released in the US earlier than in the UK or vice versa.

If you know of a new release that you think I may be interested in, leave a comment in the  area below

Let’s go ….

There are so many books being released into the coloring community this month that it was difficult to compile this list.     I can’t add them all…I would be here all night!  I’ve picked out my favorites but honestly, we are spoilt for choice this month.

Creative Haven Glorious Gardens Color by Number Coloring Book

Creative Haven are such great value for money.  It’s lovely to see them releasing a few more titles for the color by number fans as well.   This one promises ” Forty-six scenes present roses, tulips, sunflowers, succulents and more as well as dozing cats, majestic mountains, bubbling waterfalls, and the occasional garden gnome”

Animorphia Sea and Sky: Selections from Kerby’s Bestselling Animorphia

I know that some members of the coloring community are not happy with Kerby Rosane’s re-purposing and repackaging his work into different compilation books, like Colormorphia.   Personally,  I admire him for doing this.   It is making good use of his material and the work that he has already created and often appeals to a different fan base or fans that want more of the same.    I admire artists that can make the most of the market they are in.  It’s a hard slog being an artist, illustrator or designer.  I truly wish Kerby all the best with this endeavor.

Animorphia Sea and Sky won’t be making it to my shopping cart though for the simple reason I still haven’t colored any Morphias whatsoever lol.   Animorphia Sea and Sky promise: “selections from Kerby’s first extreme coloring book challenge, Animorphia. With this wondrous and intricate selection of animals from the oceans and skies, fans and newcomers alike have the chance to encounter birds, bats, fish, whales, and other creatures”

Archie & Sabrina’s Halloween Coloring Book

If you are a fan of Archie and Sabrina and friends then you might like this coloring book with a Halloween theme.   I have previously purchased an Archie Coloring Book.  . If this one follows the same format as previously, the paper may be very thin which may not suit all colorists. This coloring book promises “plenty of costumes, candies and creatures to customize in this latest entry! Plus, each image has an intricate background pattern to add to your color experience.”

Mythographic Color and Discover: Aquatic

Fans of Joseph Catimbang will be happy to see that this prolific artist has another coloring book.  His artwork always reminds me of Kerby Rosanes and he seems to be as prolific with his coloring book creation. This time there is an aquatic theme which promises colorists ” mermaids, whales, dolphins, and fish and shellfish of all kinds, along with beautiful plant life, stunning shells and rocks, and interesting water formations to color and enjoy”

Vintage Fairies Coloring Book: Lovely Images to Colour and Keep

If you love fairies as much as I do, then this coloring book might take your fancy.  Margaret Tarrant has compiled a coloring book that features the artwork of “imaginative illustrations by popular artists of the early 20th century such as Margaret Tarrant, Molly Brett, Rene Cloke, and Walter Crane. Each full-colour image is accompanied by a line drawing for coloring in, either in shades similar to those used by the artist or in colors of your choice.”

Creative Haven Elegant Tile Designs Coloring Book

Marty Noble has illustrated a number of beautiful coloring books for Creative Haven.    Her new coloring book features “31 gorgeous illustrations were adapted from tile designs dating from the 1600s–1800s, found on walls and floors of mosques, missions, and other buildings in Mexico, Holland, England, India, Morocco, and elsewhere”

Woodland Magic Painting Coloring Book

This cute little coloring book appears to be marketed to children but it looks cute enough for adults to enjoy as well.  At the time of writing a “look inside” is not available and the description is a little light on details.   From the description, it states “This book is packed with beautiful woodland scenes for you to bring to life. Simply dip the brush in water and sweep it across the black and white pages to fill the scenes with glorious colors – from squirrels playing in a tree, a badger out at night, a deer and her fawns and lots more”.     It seems that the pages are pre-painted and you just need to add water to see the picture.  I would have loved to see some pictures of this!  If I’m right,  I do like the concept and feel that it would be a fun book to “color” when you do not feel like “coloring” the usual way!

Christmas at Liberty

I’ve always had a soft spot for Liberty and the beautiful fabrics and designs the House of Liberty has created over the years.   This Christmas themed coloring book features “the enchanting story of Liberty at the most magical time of the year, told through beautiful prints to color, exclusive poetry, and notes from the designers”.

Watercolor Wherever You Are: Flowers

The selling point of this watercolor book is that it is totally portable.  You just need the book, a paintbrush, and water.   The “paints” are part of the book.    This is what the blurb says “Just add water to your paintbrush, dab on the pigment palette, and create beautiful works of watercolor art in this fun, easy painting book of floral designs”

Something Different ….

Although not typical coloring books, the following books may be of interest to colorists.

Katsuya Terada Real Size

This stunning book is not a coloring book but a book of illustrations.   It may be that you could color these illustrations but if not, it seems like a stunning book to sit and leaf through on a sunny day.   This is what the publisher promises “the definitive collection of Katsuya Terada’s black marker artworks … including illustrations from his live drawing events. Containing over 150 illustrations, each work is displayed at 16% of the original to show the whole artwork, along with the original size (real size) showing part of the artwork but revealing the detail and sensitivity of Terada’s work.”

Inspired Artist: Draw Every Little Thing: Learn to draw more than 100 everyday items

Flora Waycott has created this interactive book which promises to  help you “learn to draw and paint plants, flowers, and bicycles to the neighborhood café and the contents of the kitchen cabinet, this contemporary drawing book demonstrates just how easy it is to render the world around you with little more than a pencil, paper, and paint.” The book will also help you develop your personal style using “gouache and colored pencil. Crafty projects round out the book, allowing you to use your newfound drawing and painting skills.”

Whimsical and Wild (Happy Hour Art Journal)

Many colorists also enjoy journaling and art journals so I thought I would include this one by Jane Davenport.  It features “fanciful female figures, now accompanied by a menagerie of animal friends: cuddly koalas, noble lions, exotic birds, and more. Inspirational prompts and Jane’s stunning illustrations accompany the journal pages, which are printed on a variety of fine-art papers, including coloring paper, marker paper, and watercolor paper, all perforated for easy display. Colorful collage papers and bonus stickers with even more original art and quotations round out this gorgeous package.”

How to Draw Inky Wonderlands: Create and Color Your Own Magical Adventure

Johanna Basford has wowed us over the years with her beautiful coloring books: Secret Garden, Enchanted Forest, Lost Ocean, Magical Jungle, Johanna’s Christmas, World of Flowers and her story coloring book, Ivy and the Inky Butterfly. As well as the coloring books there are planners, journals, notebooks, canvases and every other thing imaginable that you can color and enjoy.

I often wondered what Johanna would do next as she is truly the leader in the coloring book market from a market share, branding, and marketing perspective.   Her coloring books have inspired colorists everywhere and the sheer genius of her marketing machine I am sure has inspired many of our favorite artists in some way or another.

Now, Johanna is going to teach us how to draw the way that she does.   Not content with just dumping a book on us she also has a complimentary Inky Art School on Facebook where she is running a free 10-day course that goes well with the book (but it is not necessary to have the book).  The last thing that I ever thought I would buy was Johanna’s How To Draw Inky Wonderlands.   Quite frankly, I struggle to create a smiley face or a stick figure.    But after watching a few of Johanna’s promo videos for the Inky Art Schoola and book ….the marketing worked.  Funnily enough, I found myself ordering the book and excited to learn her system and create my own Inky Wonderland or Inky Mess 🙂

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.

  • I think the ‘Colour Anywhere’ type book with water colour strips included, would be such a great idea for travelling/vacation and a gift!
