Chicken Seeds – Adult Coloring Book

Chicken Seeds is a cute coloring book that I was instantly drawn to by the cover art.   The book is part of the Eclectic Coloring Book Series.   The first book published in this Series being the Eclectic Owl.     This book takes its inspiration from vintage seed packet art.      As a lover of vintage advertising and collector of it, it was love at first sight for me.   In fact, I’ve spent half my life having a love/hate relationship with an antique seed cupboard.  I’ve followed it around Australia and either always missed buying it by hours or days, or when it has been available it hasn’t been the financially wise decision for me 🙁  One day …

So, as I do not have my own real antique vintage seed cabinet, this coloring book comes a close second best 🙂

Cover & Layout

Chicken Seeds has a matt soft cover with a vibrant design.  The cover has a slightly waxy texture which seems to be a feature of  matt covers.   The book contains 20 single page illustrations which would be great to color and frame around a country home.    The book measures 28cm x 21cm (approximately 11in x 8.5in) which tends to be standard coloring book size.

The title page for the book features a fancy font only.  It is a shame that some elements to color have not been added to decorate it.

Illustrations

The illustrations are printed on white trade stock paper and have been nicely centered on the page.   None of the images run to the spine of the book, making it very easy to color.  The drawings are lovely and of course, feature chickens.      There is a range of complexity among the drawings that I appreciate.    Some have a lot of fine detail with surrounding florals and feathers whilst others contain a more simplified design suitable for those that do not like intricate detail.

The outlines are crisp and clear in black ranging from a medium line weight to some delicate elements being drawn in a fine line weight.   All of  the illustrations reflect the look of a seed packet as they have been nicely framed in a fine line border.

Chicken Seed Packet Colouring Book

The illustrations in the book comprise 13 featuring chickens and 7 featuring eggs.

Bonus

At the end of the book there are some blank “egg” pages where you can doodle your own design.  I am never keen to do my own doodling but I know that a lot of colorists love this feature that artists provide.

I do love that at the end of the book there are 4 pages for use as a color test chart as well as a test and notes page.    It is always handy to check your colors on a piece of appear the same as that you are coloring so this is a useful addition to the book.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
