Beautiful Birds and Treetop Treasures Coloring Book  Review

Millie Marotta has produced a number of coloring books all with her distinctive line art style.   Her art work always features animals that are well patterned. They have been drawn in such a way to create the outlines of the animal.   Her previous books are [easyazon_link identifier=”1454709103″ locale=”US” tag=”mygamingweb-20″]Animal Kingdom[/easyazon_link], [easyazon_link identifier=”1454709138″ locale=”US” tag=”mygamingweb-20″]Tropical Wonderland[/easyazon_link], [easyazon_link identifier=”1454708964″ locale=”US” tag=”mygamingweb-20″]Wild Savannah[/easyazon_link] (still in my to review stack) and [easyazon_link identifier=”1454709928″ locale=”US” tag=”mygamingweb-20″]Curious Creatures[/easyazon_link].

The theme of Millie’s latest coloring book is birds and treetop treasures.    I have to admit that, I mainly envisaged birds for this book and bird nests perhaps as the treetop treasures.   I was completely wrong!   The treetop treasures are other animals that live or spend time in trees!   So you will find lovely koalas, red pandas, tree snakes, tree kangaroos, butterflies and even a bear!

Cover & Layout

The cover and layout follows the same format as previous coloring books by this artist.  A white laminate cover has a partially colored bird on the front with gold highlights on the line art, title and other text.   The line art on the front cover is indicative of the line art that you will find in the book, if you are not familiar with Millie’s work.

A yellow green spine is the background for the gold foil text.

On the back cover, the same picture from the front has been repeated, without the gold foil.

If you are super keen, you could color in this line art.

The inside cover is glossy white and there is nothing to color.

Beautiful Birds and Treetop Treasures Coloring Book measures 25cm x 25cm approximately.

Ancillary Pages

There are two text based title pages that you could use to test your mediums on.  This is followed by a two page introduction from the artist.

At the rear of the book there is a glossary of the creatures included in the book.   This is incredibly useful, especially if you wish to research the bird or animal so you can replicate their natural coloring.

You will find a page at the end of the book for you to draw your own animals and a blank page that you could use for color palettes.

Layout

Illustrations are printed on both sides of the smooth white paper.   The paper is  medium weight.  It is not designed for markers or wet media.

There are 16 pages that comprise double page scenes.   The line art does merge to the spine of the book.  However, some gentle pushing should make it a little easier to color in these areas.

Beautiful Birds and Treetop Treasures Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The line art is black, crisp and a fine line.   Each illustration has a lot of small detailed pattern on it.    This looks gorgeous when colored in and blended as in her previous books.   Colorists that have great eyesight can really enjoy the small details in Millie’s books.   Colorists that are a dab hand with blending and technique, can also add another dimensional effect to the illustrations.

Colorists that suffer from minor visual impairment, motor skill challenges or difficulty coloring small spaces may find this book too challenging.    However,  it could still be enjoyed by using color washes over areas instead of coloring individual patterns.

The line art tends to use the bulk of the page in each illustration.    There is still room to add some background effects if you wished.    The artist tends to focus on the subject matter of the page, with often only a few additional elements added.

You will notice that most animals have blank spaces left for colorists to add in the eye detail.   This is an opportunity to practice animal eyes and you could even give them a gemstone look if you are feeling especially creative!

If you tire of coloring animals, there are a couple of mandala type pages in the book as well for a bit of variety.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
