Disney Girls Coloring Book With Little Friends Review

As many readers may know already,  I adore Disney and, in fact,  I collect it.     One day when we empty out our storage container that holds all our “stuff” while we do house renovations the Disney will reappear in our house.     Disney always makes me so nostalgic for childhood when there were no cares and responsibilities and just good fun.

When I seen the Disney Girls Coloring Book with Little Friends was being released, as a Japanese coloring book in December 2016, I knew I had to have it : )

Cover & Layout

The cover of Disney Girls with Little Friends is a dust jacket that has fold out flaps.   There are a few elements of line art but really not enough to color.    The spine is gold with the title in white outlined in pink.   The back cover features 3 colored images from within the book.      From the colored images you can see how well the images would look if you were skilled at blending and shading.   I mention this, because it is often easy to dismiss Disney as a kids book but a skilled colorist can turn it into a work of art.

The inside flaps feature colored portraits from within the book that look beautiful and inspire me to pick up my pencils.

A glossy cover featuring  Disney Girls filled in and accompanied by “Princesses Rule” text all printed in hot pink protect the book.   The pink printed line art is quite small and although you could color it if you can penetrate that gloss it may be too fiddly to do so.

Gold printed image of  Pluto, Donald, Mickey and Minnie is on the inside of the card cover.

Disney Girls Coloring Book measures 25cm x 25cm.

Ancillary Pages

A plain text title page opens the book.   This would be  a great spot to test out your markers and mediums.     This is followed by a Prologue (in Japanese) and a Cast Description for the Disney Girls.    The Disney Girls are – Alice, Aurora, Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Ariel, Rapunzel, Jasmine, Tinker Bell, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, Marie and Lady.     There is text accompanying each Disney girl description but this is written in Japanese.

A Cast Description for the Little Friends has also been provided.    It lists them as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto, Chip n Dale, Pooh, Bambi, Dumbo and Pongo.      There is text accompanying each Little Friend description but this is written in Japanese.     A table of Contents in Japanese follows.  On the reverse of this page,  is a little information about the staff that worked on the book in small font at the foot of the mostly blank page.    Some scroll work with gems opens the book with text in Japanese.  I presume that this is the title for The beauty and the beast which is the first set of images.

Layout

The illustrations have been drawn on both sides of the white, good quality, medium paper.     All of the images have been orientated portrait style.

Within the book there are 10 pages of double page scenes.      The majority of images run to the seam or gutter of the coloring book.   It may be difficult to color some areas.     The binding is very tough and will require some heavy duty muscles to snap it down.   In other books that I have had like this, I have been able to eventually push down hard enough to force the book to lay better.   This book is putting up a fight and it may be a job for hubby’s muscles.

Disney Girls Coloring Book With Little Friends Images & Illustrations

Fans of Disney will love the gorgeous pictures that have been created and incorporated in this book.     You will find illustrations in scenes including nature, portrait style art and pages that seem created especially for framing.   It seems a shame that it is double sided because many of the pictures would look cute on the wall.

Sadly, there are quite a lot of patterns within the book and although cute,  I would have preferred more scenes than pattern repeats.

The line art varies throughout the book, from fine to medium weight and different colors ranging from light grey to crisp black.     A number of artists have illustrated on the book and consequently it lacks the uniformity of a single artist book.    With Disney, however,  it is one of the things that fans generally accept as most illustrators do not draw all the characters.

Colorists that have minor visual impairment will find that some of the faint grey line art will be too difficult to see.   Thankfully there are only a few of these images in the book and plenty of others to enjoy.    Fortunately, the bulk of the images have large ares of open spaces and most are not overly detailed so they should be less distracting if you have a minor visual impairment.

In each section of different images there is text in Japanese on the illustration.   Presumably, this introduces the Cast and Little Friends in that illustration.     This may interfere with some background effects that you wished to create or impact on coloring the image.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
