The Art of Laurel Burch Coloring Book Review

Laurel Burch is a well known artist with her art work being immediately recognisable through its vibrant and vivid use of color and quirky design.       Her art work and her own personal story has proved appealing and inspirational to others around the world.

Her life has been celebrated in the coloring book and companion postcard set entitled The Art of Laurel Burch.    The coloring book contains 48 illustrations from Laurel Burch some of which have not been seen previously.

The cover of the book features a colored drawing from the book in the vivid style of the artist.   There are some gold highlights on the glossy cover.   On the inside cover you will see completed colored pages and on the back cover you will find a “Laurel Burch” color palette.  The book measures approximately 28 cm x 21.5 cm (11 in x 8.5 in).

The publisher advises that the paper is “heavyweight, high quality uncoated” paper.     It has perforated pages and is designed for easy removal of the pages and framing in an 8 in x 10 in frame.  I am by no means a paper expert, but I would not describe the paper as heavy weight.    For me, the paper is good quality and I would describe it as medium weight.

Reviewing the illustrations in the Laurel Burch Coloring Book I have to wonder what the artist herself would have chosen had she been alive.    There is a lovely representation of  illustrations throughout including cats, mythical creatures and quotes.    There is also a good variety of image layout with some illustrations being whole of the page and others being more of a collection of elements.    I like that there is a mix of  portrait and landscape designs as some illustrations suit with different layouts.

The line work on the illustrations is strong, crisp and black.    Those with visual impairments should not experience any difficulties.

A range of  illustrations comprising different levels of detail have been included within the book.  I am pleased to see that there are a number of images that have large spaces making it easier for those with visual or motor impairment to color.     The beauty of these large spaced images is that they appeal to those that prefer less detailed coloring (that’s me) and skilled colorists can pull out all their tricks with blending, highlights and shadowing to really take a simple design to a whole new level.  If you like illustrations with a lot of fiddly bits there are several designs with small patterns on them that will make you smile.

About Laurel Burch

Laurel Burch was an amazingly talented artist that overcame numerous obstacles in her life. She was born in 1945 and died in 2007. She has left an amazing legacy of jewelery to collect, beautiful paintings and other art work. Her style was vivid and bold. It is no surprise that this artist has had her works recognised in a coloring book.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
