Wings and Fins Coloring Book Review

Wings and Fins coloring books is the second coloring book by Dutch artist, Marion Teunissen. Her first coloring book is the lovely, Zodiac Dreams which is also available as an art book as well.

The theme of Wings and Fins is, of course, fantasy things with wings and fins ..so fairies, angels and mermaids are all featured in this coloring book.

Cover & Layout

The glossy colored cover features a fairy, angel and mermaid from the book so the browser can instantly see the theme of the book.

Marion has self published this coloring book to ensure the book has the paper quality that colorists desire.

Wings and Fins coloring book is approximately A4 sized measuring 8 in x 11 in.

Ancillary Pages

A decorated nameplate page starts t he book with copyright information on the reverse. This would be a great spot to test out your mediums. You could also use the single page that introduces each chapter as well.

Layout

This coloring book has been divided into sections – Angels, Fairies and Mermaids. Each section features an introductory picture and the chapter title.

Illustrations have been printed on one side of the paper only.

All of the images have been orientated portrait style throughout the colouring book.

The white paper is 150 gsm which allows colorists to use different mediums on the paper. As always, I would put a blotter page between the pages in order to avoid any bleed through if using markers.

Most of the images have been aligned away from the spin but there are a couple that are near to the spine. The binding on this book is very stiff and it took me some time off camera to crack the spine enough for the book to lay down flat. I needed all my muscles to give it that crack as gentle pushing was not getting a result for me.

Art Work

The art work in this book is lovely. The illustrations fit the theme of the book well with simple outlines in crisp, black ink. The ink is a dull black and the line weight is mostly medium with some finer lines in images.

Illustrations are not overly detailed. This suits colorists that like to add their own shading and do not need guidance from the artist. The outlines are also easier to see for colorists with a minor visual impairment.

If you prefer your coloring to have a lot of shading and fine line work added for detail and texture you may not like this book.

Most of the illustrations feature a contextual background that suits the image. Colorists will be able to color buildings, ocean life, steam punk, flowers and nature. There is opportunity on most of the images to add background effects if you wanted, although they would also look fine without.

This is the sort of coloring book that would really benefit colorists that have acquired skills in blending, shading, adding highlights and other advanced techniques.
