Cat and the Great Adventure of the Sun Coloring Book  Review

I adore the Japanese coloring books that these publishers  produce.    They have a range of adorably cute animals that are drawn as simple outlines that appeals to me and my coloring style.  As always,  a picture of a bunny or two on the cover, and the promise of more inside, is a fast way to make me buy!

Cover & Layout

Cat and the Great Adventure of the Sun coloring book  has a white glossy dust jacket with partial pre colored printing on it.   The inside flap contains text in Japanese and the back flap shows ads for other coloring books by the same publisher.

On the inside of the dust jacket a charcoal grey is the background color for white line art of cute characters from the coloring book.  You could color this with gel pens if you wished.

The back of the dust jacket features a colored trio of elephants below an adorable washi tape roll (how do they think of these things!).

The laminate cover of the coloring book proper features the cover art as line art for you to color in.

Cat and the Great Adventure of the Sun measures approximately 25cm x 25cm.

Ancillary Pages

The title page features a few a cute characters to color in with text in Japanese on the reverse.

At the end of the book, there is a page featuring a few characters to color and a slab of text with copyright and publishers detail on the reverse.   Either of these pages would be the best place to test out your mediums.

You will find some coloring tips at the end of the book.  As the text is in Japanese you will need to study the pictures which are easy to follow if you do not read Japanese.

Layout

Cat and the Great Adventure of the Sun has been printed on both sides of the off white, medium quality paper.   The bulk of the illustrations are contained on one page although there are double page scenes in the book.  However, even with the single page scenes many do run close to the spine.   At the moment, the spine is really rigid and may take Mr Muscles to crush it down for ease of coloring.   In m experience, with these books, generally further use tends to relax the spine to make coloring easier.

All of the illustrations have been orientated portrait style within the book.

Cat and the Great Adventure of the Sun Coloring Book Images and Illustrations

The art work in this Japanese coloring book is simple and cute.     You will find all types of characters from simple drawn people, cute animals and a sun that has a personality and a little bit of attitude.    As well as the cute characters that are either simple shape outlines or sometimes with a dash of pattern you will also find other fun elements to color in.    There are lovely interior scenes featuring tables laden with food and bustling with chefs, garden scenes and many that have a “circus” style inspiration.

If you love quirky then you’ll love some of these images.   The artist must have an active imagination because there are sheep on swings, a sun …that’s sunbaking, unicycles, cycles and other modes of transport for our cute little animals and, of course, the sun.    As the title implies, the sun is a real part of this coloring book and instead of being used as a lightsource or element of nature is being used as a main character.   That produces some fun and certainly quirky illustrations.

Although the lines are easy to see, they are not as black and crisp as you may find in other coloring books.    They have a hand drawn, sketchy appearance to them which is quite charming.   Colorists that have a minor visual impairment may find the simple, outlined shapes easy to color but may find that there are too many details on the page.

About the author

coloringqueen

I'm Lea and I love everything to do with coloring! If it is a coloring book, a poster or even a bookmark that you can color in, I'm all over it. Of course, a girl has to have some pencils, markers, gelly rolls, pastels and what not to make those pictures pretty and I love those as well.

Whilst my coloring style lacks skill, I am enthusiastic and focused on enjoying the moment and having fun.
